Linda Holt with Lensbaby

Q: What is your favorite shoot you've ever done?

A: I just recently photographed a young lady in the almond trees for her Easter pictures. I have photographed her several times before, but I didn’t own a Lensbaby lens at the time. This time around I use my Velvet 56 and never in my wildest dreams did I think that I could make the photos this great. The dreamy, mysterious images that came out of my camera made my heart sing. When you have an idea in your head and then you put it in motion with the end result being 10 times better, that’s what makes it all worth while. Another shoot with a soon to be graduate going to her formal. Once again I use the Velvet 56 and created images for her that were so different that of her friends. The power of these lens and the creativity it allows you to show in your work only makes you hungry for more.

Q: What inspires you to reach for your camera?

A: I shoot any chance I can get. I have a full time job so the weekdays are full, but if I can just go outside and find an interesting flower or a bee or even a special way the light shines through the trees I take advantage of it. Weekends are definitely the time I use for my photography, I make a point to go to our local flower garden shops and spend hours taking picture after picture, using my Lensbaby’s. I can literally spend 2 hours just taking pictures of beautiful and interesting flowers, if the bees are out its just a bonus shoot.

Q: What are your favorite Lensbaby Lenses to use in your session?

A: The Velvet 56 is probably my favorite for its versatility. The aperture range allows for you to create crystal clear images to moody and blurred images. The Sol 45 is my fun lens, love, love the bokeh blades. Its small and light and a great walk around lens. Now I have the new soft focus II and with the crazy bokeh you can create with this, it’s just mind blowing and oh so much fun. I love my Sweets too, I have produced beautiful images from these too.

Q: How did you hear about Lensbaby, and what encouraged you to purchase a LB lens?

A: I saw it on You Tube and watch a couple of videos. I was kind of hesitant at first because I was one of those photographers that want crisp clear photos every time. But I thought what the heck, lets give it a try… I purchased the Spark 2.0, mainly for the price. If I didn’t like it I wasn’t out much, but wholly cow. That little lens made me an addict. To this day, I still pull it out and have so much fun with it… People stare at me when I use that lens because they’ve never seen anything like it. But the quality it kicks out, amazing.

Q:What was your journey to becoming a photographer like?

A: I’ve been taking photos of my kids for a very long time, but it was just family photos, nothing creative. I didn’t really know how to use a camera properly until 5-6 years ago. Reading, videos and such taught out to get out of auto into manual and boy did I love the control it gave me. I don’t want every image to be the same, some bright and cheery and some dark and mysterious. I like taking pictures of pretty much anything, if it speaks (not meaning literally) to me I snap a photo of it. I acquired different cameras from cropped to full frame to mirror less. My lens are of all sizes. But when I came to a plateau and a semi-hybernation mode is when I came across Lensbaby and thank goodness for that in which opened a whole other world of photography and the creativity jump start I needed to continue my journey.

Q: What is your favorite subject to photograph and how would you describe your photography style?

A: I do love my flowers, they are dependable and oh so different from each other. People are not bad, but they have no sense of time and how it is important when it comes to light. Flowers don’t have attitude and never disappoint. I’m not sure if I have a style other than I love contrast, I love the Lensbaby for the blur. I like dark and moody and bright and cheery. Let’s just say, I’m easy… LOL

Q: What do you love the most about photography?

A: What it does for my mood. It makes me happy. Satisfaction guaranteed for the time spent with my camera in hand.

Q: What helps you when you're struggling with a creative block?

A: Taking a drive to a different location and sometimes simply walking down the street, no specific mission, just eyes open, no expectations.

Q: Would you consider yourself an adventurous photographer, or do you tend to stay in your comfort zone?

A: Definitely comfort. I would love to be adventurous but I’m pretty simple and play it safe 99% of the time. I think if I had more time to photograph and would venture out more, but limited time means limited time to go somewhere. If I had a photographing buddy, I’d be up for an adventure though.

Q: What else would you like to see from Lensbaby in the future?

A: I’m not really sure, I love what they have done with the Lens’. If they made an auto focus, you’d be turning it off all the time… LOL.

Linda Holt

I have always loved taking photos, but it’s been about the last 5-6 years that I have taken it seriously and really gotten to know my camera. I say it’s a hobby, but it’s a serious hobby.
