I am so happy to finally be able to work with Lensbabies. I work exclusively with conceptual self portraiture and I really like to stick with in-camera techniques, so I have been eyeing Lensbaby for a long time.
These are the first shots I took with my new Lensbaby Composer. Most of them use the Wide Angle Lens. I really like the mood that the Composer creates. I also was curious to see how the Lensbaby would work with the "Cloning" technique and it creates a very interesting effect. In the color photo, both images were shot with the Composer and the variation of blur in the final composite gave exactly the effect I was looking for (this photo still needs more editing). Now, I still have my Plastic Optic, Zone Plate, Telephoto and Single Glass to experiment with!
I will say this: It is pretty difficult to work with Lensbaby when shooting self portraits, because getting the right amount of focus or non-focus is often unpredictable. But, I am really loving the challenge and the fact that it is often unpredictable really adds something to the creative process. In the black and white photos, I wanted to create a timeless and cinematic mood and the unique focus really helped to achieve what I had envisioned.
I would love to hear feedback from any other self portrait artists who use Lensbaby. I am just learning and experimenting with it, but I am really happy with the results. For others using Lensbaby with conceptual SP's, do you have any tips for locking in the sweet spot before getting in the shot? Would love to see anyone else's experiments with Lensbaby self portraits as well. I'll be experimenting with the Zone Plate optic next! :)
