and yet more optic play... posted by CMH November 21, 2008 10:24AM reply | quote

so now that i've had 5 minutes to play (ok it turned into 30 - these optics are addictive...)
the first four are my increasingly favorite plastic optic and the last... well it's either zone plate or pinhole. my very first shot. and then i read the manual and realized there's a little thingie on the bottom to switch between zone and pinhole... so i shot with whatever the "factory setting" was. what do you guys think? zone? pinhole?
i just know i was shootin' blind. ha!
thanks for stopping by!

Cindi,

Nice series. I really like #1, 3, and 4 the most! My guess on #5 is zone plate (can't remember how it was set out of the box). If it was pin hole you would have had to hold the camera steady for quite some time, unless the light was really bright you were working with. Look through the optic with your eye into the light. You will see much more light going through the zone plate than the tiny pinhole. Also, you will probably be unable to see anything in your view finder with the pinhole, but may see a very dark image using the zone plate in the view finder. Keep these great images coming -- love them!

I always love it when I get images that I can't recall what equipment & settings I used to get them! I'm not kidding ... it feels like a Lucky Dip (if kids have those where you live, Cindy). I suppose the reason I like it is that it reinforces my conviction that I care more about photographs than I do about being a photographer! I also have no interest at all in images of flowers and leaves etc ("bots") and yet these are all quite lovely photographs. Just demonstrates that you are able to show me something that I didn't even know that I wanted to know! Wish I had that talent.

aw, thanks, guys.
*rich - i'm pretty sure i was shooting with the zone plate. my house has tons of light, but not enough to let me see the image thru the pinhole i don't think.
*pro bono - well, then i'm your kind of shooter. i am so tech-ignorant (or maybe tech-apathetic) i very rarely pay attention to fstops or ap settings, etc. - i just shoot what i see and try to figure it out (or not) later. :) and to hear that i can invite you to see something in a new way is just about the highest compliment one can give. i humbly thank you. :)
