Modified my D70 ([www.digitalweddingforum.com]) to be more sensitive to IR light.
(update) Seems that this very incomplete tutorial was taken down. It took me three tries reassembling my D70 before it worked. I was sweating and shaking by the time the third moment of truth was upon me when I figured out the problem. See this post for another, better solution: [lensbabies.com]
Here is my results from a few minutes ago.

The subject was a weeping willow tree with the Willamette River and a bridge behind.
Here are three from the same walk this afternoon, not so abstract. Lamp post is a B&W with a little tone, too much crossover in cloud colors on that image to make the color work for me. -Craig You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you. I had a buddy do a similar "operation" on a Pentax camera (I think). His wife shoots only IR, and he's very happy with the results. He did say, however, that he sweat bullets during his camera surgery.
Can you make the images B/W IR in photoshop? And do you have any latitude in what colors the camera retains/sees? I don't know much about IR, so I was just curious. Very cool images. -d |

David,
I did it myself. It was more involved than the tutorial indicates. I'm excited to see some of your results. -Craig You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you. Heraclitus of Ephesus |

It's certainly new, and different, um I don't know if I ready to IRbaby until I see more results. Craig you must be upgrading to Probodies and turning your used D70's into speciality shooters.

This is very fine IR work Craig.
It looks like a big operation that can't be undone if you don't like the results.. Canon G2 is a great camera, and a guy in Hong Kong, Don Ellis, has the same reciepe for chancing the IR cut filter on the G2 camera. The only problem with the G2 is it wont work with the Lensbaby. Maybe you can do something about it, so all the poit and shoot cameras with fixed lenses can be used with LB lenses.... I know it has nothing to do with Lensbaby shots but it is really great IR photography and you can get new inspiration for IR photography. The site is kleptography. com Peter |

Being spoilt by using my G2 for IR I've been soooooo disappointed in the output from the 20D, and now I see your beautiful shot Craig! I really do need to work out how to get decent IR from it somehow.
Don's site has been another inspiration for me, I must admit...I guess that shows how weird I must be, always going for the marginal stuff....lol. Keep showing us more and more please! Mel :) In sunny Brisbane, Australia [nee-hai.com] |

Very cool stuff Craig.
My colleague Dan Richards wrote a very thorough piece on Digital IR recently. Of note: if you are scared to do the mod yourself, there are at least 2 companies that sell OEM cameras that they have modded, or they will mod your existing camera. The Sigma SD14 is the easiest camera to convert from IR + Visible and back to Visible-only because the IR-cut filter sits right inside the lens mount opening... but it doesn't appear that there's a Lensbaby compatible with the Sigma mount... I've got some IR-plus cameras, but they are Nikon mount and my 3G LB is Canon mount, so I can't get my and IR-plus-visible-plus-lensbaby-plus-HDR style shots yet :( |

I don't have a converted body anymore as everytime someone asks me to convert one for them I just sell them a D70 I already converted. didipusrex, Regarding exposure times, the images I posted were shot handheld at normal (1/250?) exposures. Converting a camera to IR means that no opaque filters are necessary. I think he means before it goes into photoshop? I'm sure you aren't having to do much in PS, since infrared images are already wacky enough on their own...

Just sent an old Canon 10D to Advanced Camera Services to have it converted to IR only (to cowardly to try myself). I'll post some shots when I get it back, maybe compared to the same view shot with my 40D.

Congratulations Craig :o)
Very nice and mystic shot, i'm an IR and UV fan too... May i ask you where from you got the filter? i mean 37mm filter or adapter? Btw D70 works great with IR and UV in comparsion with D80 or D200. |

Joz,
I got my most recent conversion filters to go over the CCD in the camera from Lifepixel. These go inside the camera and replace the IR cut filter that comes mounted in front of the CCD, behind the shutter. Prior to converting a camera I used filters from Harrison and Harrison [infrareddreams.com] that gave me good results. Shooting with a body that has not been modified requires long exposures, longer with most Canon bodies than with most Nikon bodies. I could shoot IR images at 1/40 of a second with a D100 at 1600 ISO at f1.4 in bright sunlight using one of the Harrison and Harrison IR pass filters (I don't remember which). My first few conversions were using a clear filter that I used to replace the IR cut filter on my D70 bodies. Shooting through a 25 red filter on the front of the lens was all that was needed to get the IR effect, similar to shooting Kodak high speed infrared film. Swapping out the filter for a hoya hot mirror filter got some amazing high saturation, not quite accurate color palette effects in non-ir photography. Very low grain when shot with the hot mirror too. I miss those bodies (other photographers bought them off me and I transitioned to IR only conversions. Hope this helps. -Craig You could not step twice into the same rivers; for other waters are ever flowing on to you. Heraclitus of Ephesus |
