I enhanced these images using virtualPhotographer, a free plug-in that lets you add both color and black and white photo effects.

I tried three different B/W effects for these images. There are pre-sets and also full manual control. I use it with Paint Shop Pro, but I believe it works with Photoshop and Elements as well. And its free!
