Using other optics in the Lensbaby Scout / creative apertures in a fisheye posted by Nunsofanarchy August 30, 2011 12:38AM reply | quote

Just a couple of quick questions really, I picked up a Lensbaby scout with a Fisheye optic the other week and I'm really enjoying it so far but I was looking to maybe trying a different optic in the scout to have a play. Would I be wasting my time seeing as I wont be using a tilt shift lens (yet, saving up for a composer), or will i still be able to get some interesting shots.

On a different note I was wondering if anyone had much experience in using the creative apertures with the fisheye in the scout? would it have any effect being in a fixed lens as opposed to a tilt?

Sorry for the possibly stupid questions but Im still not 100% on how all of this works yet

Edit: Great, first post and I double post it. Can a mod delete the other one please?

Hi there and welcome! These aren't stupid questions at all. :) You can use the other optics in the Scout - it's just that if you choose another selective focus optic (double glass, single glass, plastic, sweet 35) you'll be limited to having your sweet spot in the center. But, that's not exactly a bad thing...and if you buy a Composer down the road, you can just use those optics in the Composer as well. You might have an easier time learning by starting with the simpler Scout first, anyway.

As far as the creative apertures in the Scout w/ Fisheye, there are a few things to know here. First - the pre-cut shapes (vs buying the blanks and cutting your own shape) won't work too well, because the shapes cut out of them are mostly bigger than the f/4 max opening in the Fisheye. The other thing is, since the Fisheye optic doesn't really have any blur (other than a bit of softness toward the edges at the more wide open apertures) it's a bit difficult to get shapes to show up. However - if you want to get really creative and shoot abstracts with the Fisheye and creative apertures by throwing everything out of focus (which I've played around with, and can be fun) you can try that.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply! (and clearing up my mistakes lol). I'm going away for a week soon so will probably pick up another optic for the trip and have a play about with it then :)

Sounds like cutting my own apertures would be the best bet then with the fisheye, hopefully using it on a close focus with various light sources in the background should give me the sort of effect I'll be happy with.

Is there anything specific needed for cutting them or will a sharp craft knife do the job?

A sharp craft knife should do. Also, check out Craig's little video (about halfway down the page) on tips for cutting your own shapes: [store.lensbaby.com]
