which camera to use? posted by mrtn78 November 30, 2009 05:14AM reply | quote

So, I bought the Composer to go on with my Alpha 300... i'm loving the lens, but not loving my camera.

I was thinking of selling my camera and getting one that works better for me...

now I was just wondering if there is a camera system that works better - read: easier with the lensbaby system.
Shooting in Manual all the time is a bit of pain.

What kind of cameras do most of the lensbaby users use?
thanks

I think Nikon d300/s can use aperture priority, so you just set to "A", then the camera will adjust the shutter speed itself.

i've been using nikon d50 for years now, happy with the quality :) but it's still all manual. I've been checking on Micro four third camera, want something small to go with my Lensbabies.

Ditto on using the smallest camera body, I have used my pro Nikons with aperture priority, but decided my D-40.... manual only is my favorite way to Bend.

Of course if you look at the number of Canon Benders amongst us......then you might be inclined to venture that way as most of the Canons have AP mode even in the consumer bodies.

If you prefer your Bending to be of the wide angle perspective, then what you really want is a full frame sensor. The choices become narrower and a bit more expensive, but it makes a big difference .

Last but never the least.....there's the film camera bodies with through the lens exposure, full frame perspective, no dang sensor to get dirty or have to clean, cheap 35mm film and one hour processing, scanned to disc awsome quality and the choices are endless in the used department and now rather inexpensive compared to what a new digi box will cost!

The one point to remember is......it's not the equipment that makes the image, it's you ......so take your time and get the gear that you feel most comfortable with......then make aRt and have fun......:)

The D300 might be a bit out of my price range. So maybe a Canon might be the best option for me...? Possibly something in the Rebel line?

My Alpha 300 is a good camera, but I have a hard time seeing through the small viewfinder because of my glasses and how much the LCD sticks out. Being comfortable with the viewfinder is pretty key...

It's also nice to be able to share the camera with others. Passing a SLR camera that is in Manual mode to someone that only has experience using Auto on a P/S will only end in frustration and a bunch of pics that didn't turn out.

The Fuji S5 has 9-10 stops in Dynamic Range, not a bad thing when your using a LB. And has fuji color. 2nd hand D2x's are incredibly cheap at the moment . Picked another one up today with only 900 shots,a beautiful camera to use.tony.

I am using my new Composer in 4/3rds mount with 4/3rds to m4/3rds adaptor on my Panasonic G1 and GF1. I decided to go this route since I love the liveview on the m4/3rds--but consider you have a 2x crop. I added the UWA converter so this brings me to about 40mm FOV relative to FF so I'm happy with this. I can also use my old .625 WA converter (get about 62mm relative) and the tele converter too.

I have the old LB 2.0 in EF mount for my Canons--mostly used on my 5D. I really like it with FF and perhaps should have chosen to buy my new Composer in EF mount (Canon) to use with my EOS to m4/3rds adaptor so I could use with both systems--but in the end prefer shooting with the liveview on the m4/3rds.

Not trying to convince you to Not jump ship but...I've used the LB with Sony a100 and a700. Works fine in A-mode on both. I guess the 100 is a bit of a jump backwards feature-wise but...
don't know what the 700 is going for these days...might be worth a look...depending on budget of course...

Don't know how they compare to the 300 but the VF on the 100 is pretty big and on the 700 even bigger. A friend has the 330 and I did notice how small it is in comparison.

Here's a link you might find useful:

All that said, I don't think you can go wrong with a canon...

Yeah, i would like to stay with Sony. I do like their cameras.
I was hoping that that new 500s would allow you to turn off the shutter lock, but they don't.

...I went into the Sony Store and asked the sales rep there if the 500s had the option to turn off shutter lock. He looked at the camera a bit, flipped it over and opened the battery compartment and looked in there before telling me that he didn't really know.
... I thanked him for his time and drove to an actual camera store.

always go to a real camera store!

I"m leaning towards the T1I... or saving up a bit more for a 50D or 300s
