Sneak peak on new optic swap optics posted by Craig (Admin) October 20, 2009 08:22AM reply | quote

We're a couple of days away from Photo Plus Expo and I can't contain myself.

Due to all of the issues that go along with telling the press not to leak anything before launch, I have no details other than a few pictures to share. These images were shot with a Lensbaby Composer using a, soon to be announced, optic swap lens.

All images shot on a full frame digital SLR, no crop.

Enjoy.

P.S. Check out some full rez (click on "O" at top of image to see full rez version) images here: [craigstrong.smugmug.com]

Here are images from the other pending Optic Swap optic. Details to come Thursday.

All shot on a full frame digital SLR, tiny crop on the water/rocks photo to straighten. No crop on others.

Glad you like what you see.

Tony, if the frame is round think of all the wonderful edge artifacts we'd miss out on. That's 60% of the fun!

Have a beautiful day.

Great stuff! I cannot wait to get ahold of the 'soft' optic. And yes, curious what they look like wide open.

Oh, and fabulous imagery to showcase the new optics with btw.

I don't know what optics would come, I'm still using just my LB 2.0 with the accesories I've got, probably soon will come the time to buy a companion for it, yes a 'optic swap system' fellow :) Anyway the first image is an alltime favorite for me, absolutely gorgeous, timeless!

Codrin,

We share that image as an all time favorite. I had my D700 on a tripod and was using live view to focus while my son stood with his fish. This was a test shot before I got in there with him.

A great ending to one of my favorite days fishing on one of the most beautiful Oregon lakes I've ever seen. Had the whole place to ourselves.

Oh, yes, the optics, as much as I love getting new products out that can help photographers create something new, I am also a fan of simplicity and using what I have. I support you in all of this.

I love that image with your son and his fish as well Craig. When I was that age I was absolutly crazy about fishing...it really takes me back. Thank you.

I hope your new products get a great reception. So far all I have are my Composer with the double glass optic and the wide angle/macro attachment you so kindly sent me. Maybe if I'm good Santa will......:>)

Stay tuned to our webstore (updating in 8 hours or so-?) and orders (we do not expect to be backordered on this product unless demand is quite a bit higher than we anticipate) should be shipping out right after they are received.

Brian, love your signature quote. Looking forward to annoying lots of people at PPE in NYC this weekend.

Fisheye would be fun and amazing:)

People from my most recent photowalk didn't recognize me but knew that I attended in May because of my Lensbaby. Topic of discussion--want to get a Photowalk in Sacramento with Lensbaby--like Utah! What do I need to do to make that happen? We could always celebrate your new announcement in style:)

Looks like the announcement is live. Still some glitches on the site. Prices currently are only correct after you put it in your cart. Will be fixed shortly.

These both look great - really cool bokeh with the multi-hole soft focus rings.

Any idea on when these will be shipped through the UK distribution? Tax and carriage added a small fortune to my wide-angle purchase!

I am curious, what prevents the fisheye optic from being used in the Muse? Is it due to lack of 'bendability'? If so, could one still plug 'er in to the Muse? How much is the adaptor?

Congrats on the new lenses, looks amazing!

The Muse, when fully compressed, moves all of our optics closer to the mirror than the Composer does. This is necessary since the optic moves away from the image plane as soon as you begin to tilt the Muse. The Composer tilts on a different axis. In order to produce a fisheye optic for the Optic Swap System and offer it at an affordable price, we used the Composer backfocus distance as the basis of our optical design. If that backfocus distance were to be used in the Muse the back of the lens could hit your SLRs mirror when the Muse is fully compressed.

Moving such a short focal length lens away from the film plane any farther when focused on infinity would have required significant costs for a lens that is, in my experience, much better suited for use in a lens body that can be locked before Your focus is acheoved and fine-tuned. I do think that some users will want to use the Fisheye Optic with their Muse so an adapter will be available soon. I'm not sure on the price yet as we are determining machining and anodizing costs. It will be significantly less than a fisheye that would work in the Composer and the Muse.

If you have a Muse you would like to try it out on you can hold the Fisheye Optic in place while compressing to focus. It will not, however, lock into place without the adapter.

Have a beautiful day.

Question for soft focus optic - What's the different between normal double glass optic and the soft focus optic? They look identical to me apart from the multi-holes aperture disc. Can I make an multi-holes aperture disc myself to get the same result?
