How usable is the Muse at fine macro work? I am more concerned about working with the narrow depth of field when working at say f/2. I do own a 50mm prime which I often use at f/1.4, however the focus ring is stable, unlike my hands.

I don't expect this to be my primary use, although I have no macro lenses currently so I would hope for decent results.

I would normally just get the Composer, but I'm already on the list with the wife from my last gear purchase. :)

It is very good to use for macro. It requires a good steady hand. I would recommend using a 1.4x teleconverter and a +4 diopter with it from Lensbaby. It gives you a little more working distance and will give you a little better fall off in my opinion. I stay on "the list".

Personally for macro I would look at the Control Freak for a macro combo. I don't have one but I do have a LB2 & a 3D. For tripod work the 3D is definetly the G.O. To my way of thinking it sits between the Muse & the Composer. But then I have never used the composer.

The Muse is somewhat fixed at its minimum focus distance if you don't compress it from it's maximum length. I suggest mounting a macro filter on the front and moving in and out to focus rather than compressing with your fingers. F/2.0 macro work using the double glass can be very magical.

Here are a couple examples of f/2.0 macros using the double glass: [lensbaby.com]

Thanks again! I was more hoping to avoid an answer like 'it will never work reasonbly'. Now that I see that the minimum focus distance is when uncompressed, I think I'll have no problems.

Hi D,
I went out and shot a few in my backyard using the Muse, the +4 diopter and the 1.6x teleconverter with the double glass optic. I hope these will help.
