I'm not sure I'm getting the hang of this lens! It is definitely NOT easy. The off-focus blur really messes with my eyes. I started with the 5.6 ring. Another trick i use,was to make a thumbnail sheet with thumbs of the same tree,one for each aperture disc. If you try this,use a tripod!
I bring that sheet with me in My camera bag,makes it easier to choose aperture!
Also,the exposure compensation sometimes might be your best friend.
Also,My camera has built in HDR function,which sometimes makes things easier.
